My work is driven by a desire to create a continuum between the human spirit, psychological perception, and the evocation of emotion through the inanimate matter of the are mediums. My subject matter is usually derived from persoanl experiences and relationships and how imagination influences the memories of these encounters.
As an artist I am concerned with the self-created alienation and isolation of the human spirit. My subjects are posed between power and submission. I question how we can, in a matter of moments, go from being so empowered to being so dominated. This extreme flux, I believe, takes it's emotional and spiritual toll. We become stressed, confused, and paranoid, distancing ourselves and unwilling to truly be immersed in an experience or expend all of our energy.
The figures and characters in my work are symbolic of how rescue and redemption can come from the art of creating, and believing in our creations.
My work is most influenced by the paintings of the "Bay Area Figurative Artists" of the fifties and sixties. Like the figure based gestural paintings of Elmer Bishoff, David Park, Nathan Oliveira, and Richard Diebenkorn, my work has also evolved out of abstract expressionism. Ambiguity, saturated color, and the tension between the medium and the figure are primary concrens in my painting process.
